Charmer Colourblock Dress

This is a vintage knitting pattern for the Charmer dress, no. 2977. This dress is the perfect simple building block of a 1940s dress to knit plain, to introduce colourblocking or stripes, or to change the length of the hem or sleeves. The pattern is taken from the Sun-Glo Knitting Book Series 73. This book is from the 1940s and features women’s frocks, or jacket and skirt combinations. 

The size is for a 32-34 inch bust, however includes instructions on how to alter the sizes with choices from a 36” bust, 40” bust or 44” bust. 

Materials required:

• 11-12 skeins Sun-Glo Shrinkproof 4 ply fingering weight wool. This wool can be substituted with modern materials to achieve a gauge of 7 stitches x 9 rows for a 1 x 1” square.
• Knitting needles size UK 10/3.25mm. 
• Crochet hook. 
• 3 small buttons.
